The short answer

Nutanix, the San Jose cloud software company, is cutting about 5% of its global workforce, per a Form 8-K it filed with the SEC on August 4, 2026. The company did not say how many people that is. Nutanix's annual report said it had about 7,800 employees as of July 31, 2025, so 5% of that figure is about 390, and IT Europa and Blocks & Files each estimated about 400 jobs. The filing said the cuts will be substantially complete by the end of October 2026, and the figure is job cuts, not relocations.

What happened

Nutanix disclosed the plan in an 8-K, which is a form public companies use to tell the SEC about big events, under Item 2.05, the section for costs tied to exiting or disposing of part of a business. The filing, signed by CFO Rukmini Sivaraman, said that on August 4, 2026 the company announced a plan to reduce its global workforce by about 5% after a review of its business structure. SDxCentral reported the same day that a Nutanix spokesperson confirmed the 5% figure by email. There was no separate press release, based on the 8-K and the coverage from SDxCentral, People Matters and IT Europa.

Who is affected

Nutanix has not said which teams, offices or countries are affected, per SDxCentral and People Matters. The 8-K said the scope and timing may differ by jurisdiction because of local law, consultation requirements and works council processes, which are employee representative bodies in some European countries. That means some cuts outside the United States may take longer.

The 8-K lists Nutanix's headquarters at 1740 Technology Drive in San Jose, California. Nutanix's Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended July 31, 2025 said the company had about 7,800 employees worldwide on that date. IT Europa wrote that Nutanix employs around 8,000 people, without citing a source, and used that to estimate about 400 jobs, and Blocks & Files reported the same 400 estimate on August 27.

When it takes effect

The 8-K said Nutanix expects to substantially complete the reduction by the end of October 2026. HRKatha described that as cuts spread over about three months from the announcement. Blocks & Files reported on August 27 that about $32.5 million of the restructuring cost is expected to be paid in cash in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, which runs from August through October 2026.

What the company said

The 8-K said the goals are to streamline and realign the organization, improve operational efficiency and agility, and redirect resources toward strategic priorities and long-term growth. A Nutanix spokesperson told SDxCentral the company is lining up its resources behind "the areas where we see the greatest growth opportunity." The spokesperson named AI, modern application platforms including the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform, infrastructure modernization through external storage, and customer-facing sales as those areas, per SDxCentral.

People Matters reported that Nutanix's third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue was $703 million, up 10% from a year earlier, with annual recurring revenue of $2.43 billion, up 15%. Blocks & Files reported that William Blair analyst Jason Ader said management expects to reinvest most of the savings in sales capacity and partnerships.

Severance and support

The 8-K estimated pre-tax charges of about $33 million to $43 million, mainly for severance and other termination benefits, with a substantial majority expected to be cash. Blocks & Files put the midpoint at about $38 million. No per-employee severance terms were stated in the filing or the coverage. HRKatha reported that Nutanix said affected employees will be supported respectfully.
