The short answer

HubSpot is cutting nearly 660 roles, about 7% of its workforce, according to a memo CEO Yamini Rangan sent to employees on October 6, 2026, as reported by Boston.com and filed with the SEC as an exhibit to HubSpot's 8-K. The 8-K says the board approved the plan on October 1 and puts the cost at $65 million to $75 million. The cuts are job eliminations tied to a reorganization of product teams, per the memo.

What happened

Rangan told employees on Tuesday, October 6, that HubSpot was eliminating roles as it reorganizes around what it calls customer outcomes instead of its individual "Hubs," per Boston.com. HubSpot filed an 8-K the same day, signed by CFO Kate Bueker. An 8-K is a form a public company files with the SEC when something important happens between its regular reports. The 8-K says the plan eliminates roles affecting about 7% of the workforce and that the board authorized it on October 1, 2026. The memo is attached to the filing as Exhibit 99.1.

Who is affected

The memo did not name the teams or departments affected. It said each role was assessed against six criteria: strategic need, layers and spans, revenue generation, capability, capacity and leadership. A HubSpot spokesperson declined to tell The Boston Globe how many Massachusetts employees are affected. HubSpot is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and had 8,882 full-time employees at the end of 2025, with 5,724 in the Americas, per The Boston Globe. Boston.com reported the company has more than 9,000 employees and 15 offices.

When it takes effect

Per the memo, affected U.S. employees received an email from the People Team within 15 minutes of the announcement, and employees outside the U.S. were told within the same window, with the process and timing varying by country. The 8-K says the role eliminations are expected to be substantially complete by the end of the first quarter of 2027, subject to local law and consultation requirements, with most charges recorded in the fourth quarter of 2026 and substantially all cash payments made by June 30, 2027.

What the company said

Rangan wrote that HubSpot is moving from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI, and that this shift changes product, pricing and how the company serves customers, per Boston.com. She wrote that product teams would be organized around customer outcomes, such as generating demand and winning deals, instead of around Hubs, with fewer management layers and clearer ownership. Rangan wrote, "This is not driven by AI-related efficiencies." She also wrote that the cuts were not simply a cost-cutting exercise and that headcount would keep growing more slowly than revenue. The 8-K says the plan aims to create a flatter, faster organization with the resources to invest in its biggest opportunities.

Severance and support

Per the memo filed with the 8-K, departing employees receive 20 weeks of base pay plus one additional week per year of service, capped at 30 weeks. U.S. employees get five months of COBRA health coverage as a lump sum, and employees outside the U.S. get five months of Modern Health. Everyone leaving gets six months of outplacement services, which are career-transition services such as job-search help. Departing employees may keep their HubSpot laptops, which will be remotely wiped of company data, and work-from-home equipment such as monitors and keyboards. U.S. employees could have a one-on-one with a HubSpot manager on the day of the announcement, and all departing employees within the next day.

Earlier cuts at HubSpot

  • January 31, 2023: about 500 jobs, 7% of the workforce, with charges of $72 million to $105 million for severance and office consolidation, per The Boston Globe. Laid-off employees received five to seven months of pay, extended medical benefits and equity vesting, and kept their laptops, per the Globe. HubSpot had grown from 4,225 employees at the end of 2020 to more than 7,400 by early 2023, per the Globe.
